[an excerpt from a take-home final on what feminism means to me...]

(ALSO:)
Feminism is an all-encompassing term that
describes the fight of all people to be free from
oppression, whether based on sex, gender, class,
race, sexuality, religion, upbringing, location…
Feminism is not irrelevant, nor is it dead or
dying.   Feminism may eventually evolve into the
term “humanism,” as long as using that term doesn’t
mask the severity of sexism that still exists everywhere
in all societies.   Feminism is defined by each person,
using a combination of theory, personal experience,
and realistic (or, hell, even idealistic) action.
Feminism makes my life more worthwhile,
and without it I (literally) would not be here.

beautiful

I’m taking a grammar in language class this semester (because I needed credits and registered late) and the following are just a few sentences that I have to parse for homework this week:

“The five Albanians found themselves on the wrong side of Bosnia during the shelling.”
“Helsinki is full of offbeat charm”

and my personal favorite:

“The beauty of a taco lies in the eyes of the beholder.”

autumn, because my love for you is “autumnatic.”

(oh King of Queens)

So fall semester began today and I’ve gone to half of my classes. I have two on Mondays/Wednesdays – Statistics for Sociology and Soc. Theories – and two on Tuesdays/Thursdays – Feminist Theory and Grammar in Language. Statistics just might suck as I am pathetically similar to the “Math is hard” Barbie but I’ll push through. I’ve had another class with two of the people in statistics so maybe we can have a study group (not that I’ve ever been in a study group before.) Soc Theory should be pretty awesome though; my teacher is also my advisor and notoriously funny/laid back. Instead of making us buy a billion dollar textbook, he took the time to scan all 20+ readings and burn them onto cds for each student. My friend from Stats is in this class too, so again with the studying. I think that 10-15 students are in both classes… I guess I’m at the stage in school where I’m officially stuck with certain people haha. Shouldn’t be too bad, at least these people are more likely to take the classes seriously because we’re mostly juniors and seniors. (Side note: fuck, I’m a junior already.)

Anyway, I’m sitting here in Starbucks at the Student Center and am in a fabulous mood. Somewhat because I splurged on a delicious raspberry mocha frappuccino or whatever it is, but also because apparently I missed the, er, “hustle and bustle” of the school semester. It was nice to have the school and town somewhat to ourselves over summer but I do like the crowds and noise and excessive people-watching that goes on during school sessions. I’m off to work now but I’ll write more as the week progresses.
